Mixed Berries, Apple & Flaxseed Smoothie

So I’m back, after a small-ish hiatus, owing to some health troubles…and with my return, I’ve brought some healthy recipes with me. Healthy eating can be tough, especially if one has to make sudden, drastic changes to their diet and cut off many basic ingredients. However, the fun part is, healthy does not have to necessarily mean boiled, bland or raw foods. No, you don’t have to survive on bird-food either 🙂 My aim is to bring some good food, wholesome and delicious, while keeping oils, fats, sugars to a minimum, without compromising on taste.

Also, if you are ailing, or have to fight high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, or simply want to eat healthy, start today! Because frankly, once you start eating healthy, your body will want more. You don’t have to go to great lengths to procure superfoods or strange ingredients either 🙂 However, if you can, do bring home a bag of flaxseeds, and add this to your daily diet.

Flaxseeds are a great source of fiber, provide an energy boost and are rich in Omega-3 Fats..they’re also great for adding into one’s diet to help combat a number of disorders. Though tasteless, they have a rough, husky texture, and a smell that might not be pleasant for many (though I didn’t find so)…it’s a good way to add flaxseeds to your diet, disguised in soups, stews, smoothies and shakes, and even simply by adding to milk or yoghurt.

I often have this for my mid-morning meal.

Mixed Berries, Apple & Flaxseed Smoothie –

Recipe: (Makes about 2 medium sized glasses or 1 and 1/2 large one)

  • Apple – 1 large
  • Blueberries – 4
  • Strawberry – 1 small
  • Yoghurt – 2 tbsp
  • Milk – 1/2 cup
  • Flaxseed powder – 1 tsp

Method:

  1. Peel and chop apples and add into blender or smoothie maker.
  2. Take off the top off the strawberry and add in the blueberries
  3. Add the yoghurt, give it a blend until they’ve turned mushy.
  4. Add the flaxseed powder, milk enough to make it smooth and not too runny.
  5. Whip the smoothie or blend it until nice and frothy.
  6. Pour into serving glass, cool…and before serving, sprinkle a dash of flaxseed powder on top

Note: Flaxseeds can be had whole, by sprinkling over your breads or savoury cakes (if you bake), or you can make a dry powder and store this in an air-tight container inside your refrigerator.
